‘Cleveland Creek’

For our outing on Sunday June 18th we will meet at 9am at ‘Cleveland Creek’. This small creek with no formal name is accessible from the AIMS Road.

• From Townsville travel south on the Bruce Highway (approx. 30 minutes) to the AIMS turnoff, then travel along the AIMS road approx. 10 mins, see map below.

• After you pass the turn-off for Cocoa Creek, the road curves to the right and then crosses ‘Cleveland Creek’. There is space to park on the right, just after you cross the bridge.

• From the road it’s a relatively easy walk along the sandy creek bed. From Eucalypt forest the vegetation gradually changes to gallery forest and finally transitions to mangroves which fringe Chunda Bay. Although the distance is only about 1 km, there’s a wide variety of plants to identify. It’s straightforward to follow the creek so anyone wishing to turn back early or stay longer can easily do so.

• Please bring drinking water, insect repellent, snacks and all your plant wisdom. You can print our Cleveland Creek Plant Species 2020 and help to spot more species to expand the list!
